Babe Ruth essays Babe Ruth is one of the most influential sports athletes in history. He overcame many obstacles in his life, like a bad childhood, people not believing in him, and his parents and grandparents dying, to get to where he is now. Not only did his childhood deprive him of being influenced by his parents but with his grandparents also. You see his parents died when he was young. Soon after that his grandparents died. After his grandparents died foster family took custody of him but sent him to a boarding school and there he got 2 wholesome meals a day and was around people that cared about him 24 hours a day. Despite of his childhood he still became very famous. Even though his parents died when he was young he was still able to learn baseball from a role model they called brother Mathias who was a member of the clergy. Soon this role model saw that Ruth was getting way too good at baseball for the coaches at his boarding school so they sent him to another boarding school where some of the states best coaches were at. Since he became so famous after his bad childhood he showed people that you must keep following your dreams if you want to reach them. Even though he suffered many deaths through his childhood he still gave 100% effort all the time. When he told his friends that he wanted to be a baseball player when he grew up they all mostly laughed at him but he knew one day that he would get there. Not only does this inspirational story prove he was very confident in himself but that he is one of the most influential sports athletes in history. Without his ongoing struggle to live a happy and easy life this accomplishment might not have been so great. ...

Reflective Account of Child GSA Recently in our house in the month of May this year a young boy has joined as a day student. I will refer to him as Jake in this reflective account (this is not his real name and all relevant information/personal data regarding exact time of the movement has been changed in order to comply with the CSA Confidentiality Policy). When Jake first came to the house he of course came as a trial period and he has been accompanied by two other care workers from his former placement/school who knew him very well. This was a transition for him and also for us. His placement with our house was a two day a week. These two days were spread apart into Mondays and Fridays. In order to assess his needs I believe it is required intensive observation. The information provided from his previous school, parents and care workers/social worker it is very important but I believe that working hands on with him will allow a better understanding and I could make a proper evaluation of his needs according to the new environment and settings that he is currently surrounded by. When a new student enters our house, everyones vigilance/attention and my own it is much higher in order to understand his needs, to assess him and fully understand him as an individual. I believe that everyone it is unique in their own way and to fully assess someone it takes a lot of care, understanding and information in order to take the right decisions for that person and provide the best care /therapeutic program so that they can grow and develop furthermore. Jake is a very outspoken young man, knows what he wants and has grown a lot in the last months in independence and is more able to deal with changes than when he has first arrived to our house. As an initial assessment it has been taking into consideration all the information gathered from his previous care plans, statements from care workers, discussion with his parents and most importantly by talking to Jake and finding out what he thinks and wants to do. CSA uses a series of therapies and therapeutic activities and they are as follows: therapeutic art, music, speech, movement, riding, play, massage, foot bath and counselling. Every child and young adult that is attending school or it is part of a placement with CSA has the available support to benefit from all these activities. These therapeutic activities happen as a one to one situation unless stated otherwise in the child or young persons care plan. CSA has also a range of workshops available to every student that is in the community. They are as follows: metal, pottery, candle, weaver, felting, green woodwork and garden workshop. These workshops help with the increase of creativity, independence and self esteem which gives the students an incredible sense of achieving once they hold their creations into their own hands and not only also during the creative process. Discussing with Jake, I quickly found out that he likes video games and that he is very technological. Jake is also a very good communicator which helped me understand quicker what and how I should approach a development care plan and properly assess his needs. Also by reading and asking about him from multiple sources provided but not only, especially through daily observation and working with Jake has been equally important. At the beginning like I said his trial period consisted in showing him around the house, estate, programmes and workshops. He got to know everyone else from the house residents, day students and co-workers. He has been accompanied for the first month by other two staff members from his previous school and by me. The input from his parents, the information from his school, reading his previous care plan and the information from previous staff who has worked with Jake has helped me assess and better understand Jakes needs. Jake though has been the one who helped the most in order for us to provide the best care plan and fulfil his needs. After each day that Jake spends with us it has been recorded in a diary which has helped me make his care plan and his individual risk assessment. They are all kept in the office in his personal file. After his arrival to the house there are 28 days in which I have to provide his care plan and the intended approach. Working with my colleagues, the craft masters, parents, former care workers from his previous school and with Jakes input I was able to make his care plan. Speaking with everyone involved gives me a better understanding of the whole situation and gives me the opportunity to take the best decisions. After doing so I made sure that everyone from the house who was involved in his care was aware, read, understood and that we all stand together on a common ground and take the same approach. These have been done through multiple meetings regarding Jake with all the personal that was involved in his care. All observations, assessments and reviews are recorded in his personal file and it is kept in the office of the house and the main office of CSA. Each time he was with us has been documented and recorded his progress in his personal diary which is up to date. His personal file also includes a few incident reports. The first few times that Jake was with us, actually the first two he was outgoing and very communicative. In order to asses a childs needs according to the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 under section 24 it is primordial that it is looked upon at the child needs and it is equally important that it is looked at also at the ability of the carer in order to provide the care. Both parties are actually being assessed by the Council in order to provide the best care and the most relevant support that it is needed. Meeting this need for Jake, gives us great responsibility in order to bring his development further. When his transition started with the CSA and the house for Jake it has been done through the proper channels. For example: Permission from his family in order to gather information that will allow us to understand and create a plan in order to meet up his needs, the discussions in the meetings regarding the assessment and most importantly a one to one get to know the child in a safe environment and space are the basic approach that gave us an insight. After all this a copy of the assessment it is handed over to the family once all this is finalized. As a general background Jake is a 7*(not his real age) year old young man and he has been struggling with accessing his education since nursery. He has been diagnosis with ASD and ADHD. When he feels that he is under pressure he has a tendency to present aggressive and violent behaviour. He is also a very chatty young man. After a period of trial which consisted of Jake being in our house on Mondays and Fridays there has been a review concerning Jakes updates which was all about his adaptability to the new settings and if we were going on the right track regarding his development and needs. Clearly something needed to be changed if I wanted that this process to work out. Asking my colleagues and the craft masters about what and how I should best support his needs. An idea came that if these would have to work the space between Mondays to Friday should change. The decision was consulted with his parents and with all staff of our house that Jake will attend every day of the week for a shorter period of time in order to make a difference. I find this method to be very efficient and it has been proven with another student of our house and clearly worked. Less time during the day but on a scale that will include the whole week. Also during this review because of all the disturbing behaviour he was engaging when he was picked up by the taxi and his previous care workers, I decided that this will stop and he should be picked up by his mum or different taxi driver and staff. His mum agreed. After all this changes Jake has shown a lot of more calm and ease to be with us. He started to engage more in the house and with his co-workers and he started to attend more and more workshops that he has dismissed previously. He had at the beginning a two to one co-worker and now after six months he has progressed to a one to one co-worker. There are times still when he acts out but he has also learned to have a time out or a break when he needs it. The staff is focusing on the positive behaviour rather than the bad one and once Jake was calm and ready to listen everything has been explained to him. Everyone from the co-workers does the same thing and we all stand together on a common ground in order to help Jake. Once the plan is set out, everyone is to care it out accordingly. When a set of practice are respected and applicable by everyone in the team as an united front this has proven to give tremendous results in the care of the child/young persons needs. As positive child behaviour methods and techniques CSA, uses a series of behavioural techniques which have been specified on page A of this paper. Through art, baking and always teaching them to ask nicely and to say thank you when they expect something to happen. Counselling and trying to make them understand is also a method that CSA uses which has been very effective with Jake. And lastly the consequences for example when they have less than a great day has been proven to be as equally effective when used as a united front. At home it has been agreed that they should use similar techniques when Jake becomes a little bit less aware/unsettled. For example to keep his bedroom tidy, no video games after 10 and so on. In order to keep and maintain a positive outcome but most importantly a positive behaviour Jake has agreed that he when overwhelmed will take a break/time out in order to collect his thoughts where he will not feel pressure from staff in order to attend the next activity for example. In our weekly meeting we discuss and evaluate all sides. Everyone gets the chance to speak and to offer an opinion, support for the work. Once things are discussed especially on improvements and how to best support that positive behaviour within the program I take the decision to sustain or to cancel something that it is less than that. For example Jake didnt want to have snack with everyone else so instead was offered to have a picnic outside together with 2 other co-workers and another student which seemed to make Jake very happy. This has been later integrated in his program because of the positive impact it had on Jake.

Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz In the Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Mordecai Richler clearly intends to portray his main character as a failure.   Duddy understands perfectly well that a man must pursue his dreams, which is why he is one of the most motivated young man of his time.   From the moment Duddy hears his grandfather say, "A man without land is nobody,† he is prepared to seek the land of his dreams.   This aspiration of Duddy’s is very respectable, but unfortunately his methods are totally inappropriate, and that leads to him being a failure.      The moment that Duddy began to immerse himself into the establishment of his film company, it could be seen that he was willing to do anything to get money, even if he had to lie.   For example, the film Duddy made for the bar mitzvah was of extremely poor quality, and as a result, the product was an obvious failure.   Duddy himself knew that well: â€Å"Duddy didn’t say a word all though the screening but afterwards he was sick to his stomach.† (Page 148). Later, Duddy said to Mr. Friar: â€Å"I could sell Mr. Cohn a dead horse easier then this pile of _† (page 148).   After this particular incident, Duddy does not even speak honestly to his clients.   In conclusion, the only way Duddy sells his waste films is by telling lies.   He always lies to gain money, and that’s all that Duddy cares about.        Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Duddy has never been loved in his family, so originally he was quite content to know that Yvette cares about him.   At the beginning, Yvette and Duddy are in love.     Ã¢â‚¬Å"It’s so nice to see you lie still for once, she said.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Your always running or jumping or scratching.     Duddy was surprised and flattered to discover that  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     anyone cared enough to watch him so closely.† (Page 92)      As time passed by, however, Duddy began to use Yvette as a tool.   The main reason for that is Duddy was striving to get the land, and since he could not legally own it as a minor, he employed Yvette to act as a figurehead in his purchase.   This treatment of Yvette, combined with her breaking ties with her family due to Duddy being a Jew, is what ruins their relationship.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning Essay

Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett was born on 6th of March in year 1806, in Durham, England. Edward Moulton-Barrett was her father who spent most of his life in Jamaican sugar plantations but later in the year 1809 he moved to Hope End, which was a 500-acre estate near the Malvern Hills. This young girl had a tremendous childhood as she has eleven brothers and sisters, not only this she has her pony around the grounds with which she played all the time. Besides this she had a good nature and often visited other families in the neighborhood, as well as arranging family theatrical productions. Later in the year 1820, she faced numerous problems regarding her health, as doctors diagnosed that she has a cord problem in her stomach, which had seemed to break. Later on, the doctors found nothing wrong with her gynecological area, but still that mysterious illness was with her as she was long invalid, taking morphine for the pains for the rest of her life. Not only this, due to her drug habits she was facing such illness issues in her life at a very early stage of her life. Besides that problem in her life, in the year 1821 her mother died when she was 22 years old. After this incident Dr. Coker prescribed opium for a nervous disorder. At this point this young girl faced some severe problems but she continued her life. Since her childhood Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett was fond of writing poems. She spent most of her time in her room all alone, thinking and imagining different aspects of life and then reforming all those imaginations and start writing them as a poem. Initially her main source was her dog who also gave her company, as she was living all alone in her house. She called her dog â€Å"Flush† and later she also wrote a poem about her dog and in that poem she declared the fact that how her dog helped her out in her imagination as well as in her times when she was all alone. In the year 1844 her poems inspired numerous poets due to which in the year 1845 Robert Browning wrote his first letter to Elizabeth Barrett in which he enclosed one of the striking love story. Besides this it was also revealed that this letter belonged to the ‘fan mail’ category, this beautiful story was not just a story or poem but more than just poet-to-poet as through this Robert Browning declare the fact that â€Å"†¦ I do, as I say, love these books with all my heart — and I love you too. † (Helen Cooper, pg 18) Later in the year 1846 Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning got married, but they didn’t announce their marriage and kept it as a secret. In addition with this it was also declared that Robert Browning married Elizabeth Barrett only to have fame and wealth, numerous critics gave there analysts and points regarding this matter. (Helen Cooper, pg 3-22) ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING’S LIFE AS AN POET:- Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett is still prominent and highlighted as the most respected and successful woman poet of the Victorian period. She always looked forward to having a laureateship which she got in the year 1850. Since her school days she was fond of reading Shakespearian plays, parts of Pope’s Homeric translations, as well as passages from Paradise Lost. Besides this she was also fond of having deep knowledge of the histories of England, Greece, and Rome before the age of ten. We can declare that this lady was self-taught in almost every respect. In her teenage years she went through the Greek and Latin authors and always loved to read such kind of masterpieces. Her deep and sound knowledge of all the above mentioned things formed her work and writings magnificent. Nearly all her work reflected human rights. She wrote her first poem at the age of eight, her masterpiece is still praised and kept in the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library. She declared her initial poem as â€Å"The Battle of Marathon† which was published when she was just fourteen years of age. Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett later reformed the title and declared it as â€Å"Pope’s Homer done over again, or rather undone. † After this above-mentioned masterpiece she wrote another poem whish she declared as † Epic† at the age of twelve that was fundamentally a fusion of four masterpieces of rhyming couplets. Later at the age of twenty she met a blind, middle-aged scholar, who assisted her in strengthening her Greek styles and principles as well. During that time she noticed astonishing points in the Greek literature like Homer, Pindar, Aristophanes and several more. But this friendship and training remained for long. She declared her classic work that also covers many aspects of religion as â€Å"not the deep persuasion of the mild Christian but the wild visions of an enthusiast. † (Marjorie Stone, 322-325) Her family always attended several events in churches and always gave their services to them so did Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett by highlighting the Bible and Missionary societies point in her poems. In the year 1822 she started following scholarly and literary poets, giving this more of her time as well. Later in year 1838 her first volume was published, which reflected her mature thinking of imaginations regarding several things. In addition with this it was also found out that she gave her own name to her first book. This young lady, Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett gave her first collections of poems in the year 1826 and titled this as â€Å"An Essay on Mind and Other Poems†. This work of her attracted numerous readers especially the blind scholar of the Greek language, Hugh Stuart Boyd, as well as a Greek scholar, Uvedale Price. Later in the year 1833 she gave translations of Aeschylus’s Prometheus Bound which was also very much appraised by readers and still is followed by several readers of this era as well. In the year 1844 she wrote such masterpiece that attracted numerous poets as well as Robert Browning. She declared this as â€Å"Sonnets from the Portuguese† in which she highlighted and expressed her emotions and love themes as well. Later in the year 1849 she supported abolition of slavery through her poem which she declared as â€Å"The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim’s Point†. But this poem was a huge failure in her life and was not accepted many readers as well. Due to such failures which actually caused a financial problem in her life, she left Hope End and moved to London. After facing all such problems and finally settling in London she again started writing. At that time she wrote some other masterpieces like The Romaunt of Margaret, The Romaunt of the Page as well as The Poet’s Vow, All these writings are based on literature. (Gardner B. Taplin, 45-55) The Cry of the Children is also one of her best writings in which she emphasized on numerous points that have its own significance but were never discussed before. Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett as a poet wrote some critical papers in praise of numerous works including Richard Henry Horne’s like A New Spirit of the Age. Once she stated that â€Å"Girls blush, sometimes, because they are alive, half wishing they were dead to save the shame. The sudden blush devours them, neck and brow; they have drawn too near the fire of life, like gnats, and flare up bodily, wings and all. What then? Who’s sorry for a gnat or girl†? (Dorothy Mermin, pg 217) Later in the year 1844 she published two more volumes of herself as which were fundamentally composed of A Drama of Exile, A Vision of Poets, and Lady Geraldine’s Courtship. Both of these volumes covered several issues of her life as well as her religion. As a poet she discussed on several issues of life one of them was woman’s life as well, she wrote a verse-novel which she declared as Aurora Leigh, in this novel she included a poem which points out the fact that how women are spending their lives and what sorts of problems they are facing. In short this novel is full of ambition that she used in order to protest things regarding woman’s life. She also worked on political issues and wrote a small volume on that which was declared as â€Å"Poems before Congress†. On June 29th 1861, Elizabeth Browning died and was buried in Florence in an English Cemetery. As a poet her work which we can also declare as a masterpiece and can never be forgotten as she was the first woman poet who had so much courage to write and highlight so many different issues. She was one of the best poets of her time and her work and her life as a poet are still praised as well as followed by other poets of this era as well. Only One Way to Stop a Bully Essay

Bullying has become a major issue in the past 5 years. This is something we hear of way too often whether it is at school, work, or even on the news. Bullying is not your typical kid who steals a student’s lunch money either; there are several cases worldwide that have ended in suicide for some. When it comes down to the severity of suicide or even physical harm that is when it’s no longer just a simple slap on the wrist, but rather a closer, deeper look into what we can start doing to change this and fast. In There’s Only One Way to Stop a Bully, an essay written by Susan Engel and Marlene Sandstrom they speak about this issue in depth. Sandstrom and Engel speak of specific ways we as a community and faculty at schools should incorporate lessons on how to deal, recognize, and solve bullying in everyday life. The authors also speak of a new law that has been passed in order to address and stop bullying. They support this claim by providing us with examples. One example is telling us of ideas that teachers have put to the test to defeat this issue, such as a teacher enforcing a rule that students could not exclude anyone from their play and the positive impact this brought. Sandstrom and Engel also support this by telling us of a school in Norway that has put much emphasis on this issue and by doing so, have succeeded in lowering the bullying rate. Although the authors brought valid points, there are a few key factors missing from this essay. One being that when Sandstrom and Engel introduced this new law that was passed to target bullying, they did not go into enough detail as far as the specifics of this law. What are the consequences of this law? It states that the most serious cases of bullying should be reported to law officials but at what degree do they consider bullying serious? I found myself asking these questions when reading the essay. This particular law was such a big part of the essay; I felt that more emphasis was needed. Another weakness I found in this essay was that I did not feel like it was so much an argumentative piece of writing but rather an essay informing me of instances and facts. In argumentative writing I always find myself stopping to relate, or to agree/disagree with the author on the topic. Although the authors made great points, while reading this I did not once stop to react to what the author was supposed to be â€Å"arguing†. There were many things that I enjoyed about this essay and brought me a positive outlook on this topic. The author used a lot of examples making it easy to read and make sense of the main claim. For instance, the author spoke of the success this law has made possible by speaking of Norway, a school who has really recognized this issue and applied it to their curriculum. The author also noted a teacher in particular who has enforced a specific rule in helping eliminate bullying. Rather than speaking of instances in a plain matter the author used specific examples and listed persons in particular bringing the realness of the matter to life.
